Louisiana Sugar Cane Harvest

We were in Louisiana in November and drove out
into sugar cane country.  They were harvesting the sugar
and they do that by burning the leaves, leaving the cane, thus
making it easier to cut down. It was quite a beautiful sight
and it smelled wonderful!

sunrise walk on the beach at folly ........

I love early walks on Folly Beach and
especially in the winter when you practically have the
beach to yourself.  One day I will TRY to capture on canvas
one of the beautiful winter sunrises over the Atlantic.
I am always reminded of the line  "poems are made
by fools like me, but only God can make a tree."

old tobacco barn

Back in the 70's, when we lived in Eastern
North Carolina, the landscape was dotted
with tobacco drying barns. Haven't
been back in a while and I wonder if
many still stand.

let's prance

Do most of you have a subject that you "go to" when you
really don't have anything else that is moving you to paint
that day? For me it is horses...they are such beautiful animals
and I have sketched and painted them since I was a child....up
close and in person they frighten me a bit because they are so
big and you have to respect them but I have always admired
them from afar.

Fall 2012 continued

I have set a goal, as have all of you, to paint every day.
I have found it has really helped me to "loosen up" and
that is a good thing, no? I did this in about half an hour,
and I am sure some of you are thinking that it looks like
it (and not in a good way) ha ha....but art is subjective.
I am rather pleased with this one myself...simple design,
simple color scheme, just go for it and have fun.

apple season in Ellijay, Georgia

16x20 oil on canvas
In October we drove the "apple trail" through
North Georgia, stopping at stands along
the way to buy apples, and jams and jellies
and pastries...yum.

you got me singin' the blues

16x20 oil on canvas
I am always revisiting painting people
because the subject is one that I can
really mess up by working it too much, so
I try to finish a painting with people in it
in one quick session. I like to look for shadows
because they can help set the mood.
I feel like I have a lot to learn when it comes to
human subjects! Always a challenge.

Way West of Chi-town

12x12 oil on canvas
When I was growing up in Illinois, Naperville and all the
western "suburbs" of Chicago were interspersed with farms.
Most of these family farms have disappeared. But my memory
is of a barn and silos, the house with a solitary shade tree, and acres
and acres of crops.

tipsy pear

8x10 oil on canvas
I have noticed that pears seem to be a popular subject
for daily painters.  It must be because they come in so
many different shapes and sizes and colors. I liked this
one because it couldn't stand up by itself. It was a little
different and that's a good thing! what do you like best
about painting this fruit? Besides eating it afterward that is!
